If Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao do not fight this November, I’m going to be real heated. I won’t be as upset as Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert was after Lebron James bolted for Miami last week. My angst will probably be closer to that of a New York Knicks fan (who also lost out on James) — upset, but not "Dan Gilbert-upset."
Lebron’s decision was televised and viewed by 10 million people. Mayweather’s decision will probably not be televised and will not be viewed by millions. However, the decision will send similar shock-waves throughout the boxing world and broader sports world. Yes, this fight-in-the-making is that big.
The Top Five Reasons Why Mayweather-Pacquiao Needs To Happen This November
- Mayweather’s reputation will take another major blow, should he walk away from this fight a second time.
- I do not want to see Pacquiao beat up Miguel Cotto again.
- It’s been a very quiet summer in boxing, we need a rise in the fall.
- Antonio Margarito, another possible Mayweather substitute, does not deserve the payday.
- It should have happened last year. Period.
According to ESPN.COM’s Dan Rafael, Mayweather has until week’s end to agree to the terms of the fight. Now that the so-called "no comment" moratorium is obviously over, let’s hope that Mayweather’s comment by week’s end is a resounding, Obama-like, "yes we can." If it’s not, I’ll be the disappointed Knick fan that I am — waiting until next year for better news.

I think it’s time to face facts. Mayweather does NOT want this
fight. He’s SCARED of Pac. Hell, Pac has agreed to all of
Mayweathers whining, bitching demands. NOW what excuse
does he have? I’ll tell you what the excuse will be: corner trouble. His
uncle Roger is likely to be in jail (where he no doubt belongs),
leaving Mayweather trainer-less. Mark my words: Pretty Boy KNOWS
that Pac is the one that’s going to blemish his record, and he
absolutely does not want that….
Ja Dawson says
@pjb I hope you are not right, for the sake of boxing. I will concede though, if Pacquiao accepted random drug testing all the way through, it’d be hard to wonder if something chicken-is-a-cooking in the Mayweather backyard.
Jeff says
I’m surprised how interested you guys are in this fight. For a fighter in Mayweather who very limited public appeal in my opinion. I could really care less if I ever see him fight again. He could be 60-0 for all I care. When we talk about all time greats. His name never comes to mind. I’m just going to assume Pacquiao beats him. Thats enough for me. screw Floyd. This fight lost my interest a long time ago.
Jeff says
Floyd Mathweather is a total chump, and I could personally care less if we ever here from him again. He’s scared, he knows he’s going to lose. I am fine with that conclusion. Manny move on. Floyd needs this fight more than you do.
Ja Dawson says
@Jeff Floyd Mathweather is a total chump, I have a hard time calling any person that takes punches to the face (in Floyd’s case, not much I guess) a chump. And I don’t think he’s scared to fight Pacquiao but the longer this fight gets passed up, he’ll do nothing to diminish the perception that he is in fact scared.
Ja Dawson says
@Jeff I think Mayweather defeats Pacquiao and does it pretty easily if and when the fight is made. And I’m not a HUGE fan of Mayweather but I can not deny his otherworldly fisticuffs. Sure he’s not as great as he often claims to be, but saying that he is not an all-time great is not really accurate (he’ll be a first ballot Hall of Famer).
Ja Dawson says
@Jeff I’ll admit though, with each passing day, the fight loses luster…no doubt.
Jeff says
Wow. I don’t think Floyd has the confidence he could win, or he would have already signed this flight a long time ago and collected his millions. The fact you believe in him, and he does not believe in himself is alarming.
Ja Dawson says
@Jeff I think the fight happens…but unfortunately next year, and largely due to Roger Mayweather being unavailable to train Floyd, Jr. The wild card – would Floyd fight Pacquiao in November with his recently estranged pops in his corner?

officially now it’s magarito vs pac man, let me be the first to pic margarito in this fight. Pacman/margarito sprlls big trouble for the”pacster”, this is certainly not a good fight for manny, with antonio’s chin and persistance mannyy would be much better served to seek another fight.@Ja Dawson:
Ja Dawson says
@pjb Now it appears that it’s Pacquiao vs Margarito?!?!? Awful fight…is Bob Arum serious. Margarito is not even licensed in the US….there are so many other worthy fights for Pacquiao if Mayweather balked in 2010…Berto, Bradley, Mosley, and Williams. Man, boxing is REALLY annoying me right about now!
Ja Dawson says
@jorge That’s disgusting. Top Rank just robbing the public pitting Pacquiao against a man (Margarito) who is lucky to not be incarcerated. I’m really getting tied of all of the Top Rank, paper superfights: Pacquiao-Clottey, Cotto-Foreman and now this…not pathetic, but not scintillating to say the least!
jabbo says
agreed Ja, magarito should never be allowed to even enter a ring in my opinion but it is what is, and what is one hell-of -match -up. In my opion, this is manny’s first real welter weight threat and i would be extremely impressed if he’s up to this particular task. I see margarito nullifying manny’s speed with his relentless speed and iron chin and ultimately open up an incredible can of soup that will make for some very interesting matches and title turn overs in the near future.@Ja Dawson:
Ja Dawson says
@jabbo On paper, the only drama is the fact that Margarito is a much bigger man. Other than that, he’ll just be a big punching bag. And with the hand-wrapping controversy, everything he’s done prior can be brought into questions. Many has more skills, punches harder, has fought better competition, has better footwork, is closer to his prime, etc. It’s a blowout if you ask me.
jabbo says
looking forwarded to the results ja, i see margarito as a “spoiler in this tournament and i think if you give this fight the analysis it deserves(non tainted by your feelings about antoinio’s low-life behavior)he should still like the man to beat in this fight and to be honest with you, i’d like to see him get his “block knocked off”for what he did, but all things considered i think he kicks manny’s but.@Ja Dawson:
Ja Dawson says
@jabbo Man, this is so awful for boxing. Word is that Arum was mad disingenuous and dishonest about the so-called Mayweather negotiations, and has been positioning for a Pacquiao match against one of his supporting cast of Top Rank fighters as the “back-up plan.” I don’t know what to believe at this point, he or Ellerbee, Haymon and company. And to the fight, Margarito only has size; I just think he’s seen his best days (and in hindsight, even those best days may now be in question anyway). I’m thinking Pacquiao by late stoppage; maybe Margarito’s corner even throws in the towel. The fight will do surprisingly awful on PPV. I am suspecting that boxing fans simply will not drink the Kool-Aid and fork over another $50 to see Pac Man beat up another Top Rank boxer. First Cotto, then Clottey, and now Margarito. Besides his cheating tactics, etc, seriously, what has Margarito done in the ring since his destruction at the hands of Mosley to deserve a fight against a champ? Can you tell I’m upset? 🙂
jabbo says
Absolutely! And upset we all should be, but what most people tend to overlook is that Manny’s popularity is limited to his challenging a popular mexican fighter and at that point cheat or no cheat, the mexican fans are coming out in droves! i liken Manny’s popularity to that of Money Mayweathers’ popularity when he fights a fighter of mexican decent, (the mexican fans come out to see him lose!) tit’s no secret who the boxing fans are in America as a whole and they will support this fight.
Ja Dawson says
No doubt. Pacquiao in 8!
GOAT says
Dude, people said that Mayweather did not want to and would not fight Shane Mosley because he was afraid. Look what happened in that fight! AZZ WHOPED! This man has beat down all that were put in front of him now I refuse to believe that all the fighters he fought could not fight especially when many of them were considered top ranked fighters. When are you guys gonna just give the man his props. Pacman will be no different from all the other folks when he loses to Mayweather. But someone will make an excuse for Pacman just to try to make Mayweather look bad. HATER!!!!!!!!
Ja Dawson says
@GOAT Although I agree with you that Mayweather would defeat Pacquiao should they meet, he/his team’s recent handling of the “making of Money vs Pac,” leave a lot to be desired, and raise a lot of questions about whether Mayweather truly wants the fight. Trust me, I don’t think EITHER man is scared of the other, but this nonsense has to stop, especially with us boxing fans chomping at the bit for this superfight. They wait too long and interest may wane significantly…OR NOT! lol
Juan Estrada says
If Mayweather would not fight Pacquaio, what about Margarito then? or Cotto? Viva Mexico! Viva Puerto Rico!
Ja Dawson says
I can dig that, but preferably Cotto.
