If Floyd "Money" Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO’s) is rusty, he may have some trouble with "Vicious" Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s). But if he’s on his "A-game," which I expect Money to be, the only thing vicious about Ortiz will be the manner in which he is stopped late in the fight.
A late Mayweather stoppage victory over Ortiz is what I expect, and here’s why:
- Mayweather has faster hands;
- Mayweather has better defense;
- Mayweather’s ring generalship is superior;
- Mayweather has faced stiffer competition;
- Ortiz is the more powerful man;
- Mayweather’s stamina is rivaled by one man*;
- Mayweather’s chin is sturdier;
- Mayweather’s footwork is better;
- Ortiz appears to be the naturally bigger man,
- and he will also have the "location" advantage, fighting in Las Vegas in front of many Mexican and Mexican-American fans.
In case you weren’t counting, that’s eight key fight factors in Mayweather’s favor. According to my calculations, this adds up to a comprehensive Mayweather victory via technical knockout. Don’t let the pre-fight hype fool you, this fight will not be close.
I sincerely hope that Mayweather-Ortiz and the third installment of Pacquiao*-Marquez slated for November 12 are mere appetizers to boxing’s main course–Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. If it ain’t, my anger will make the Mad Rapper‘s angst seem like a mild tantrum.

i live in las vegas. i dont know 3 mexicans in all of lv that can afford a 1000$ ticket to see the fight. what are u talking about!? this is moneys, he lives here. 365 days of the year, this is his turf, filled with las vegas gamblers.
Ja Dawson says
@jb Interesting perspective jb but I respectfully disagree based on the partisanship that I have seen displayed for many of Mayweather’s opponents (i.e. Mexican ones) when fighting in Vegas. His fights with Castillo come to mind in particular.
ybsteam says
Has to be Mayweather, Ortiz is a big Welterweight and punches harder than the Pretty boy, but you have to hit the target, he stands one chance… too land a bomb,
Mayweather will be cagey early on but all round better skills, sharp right hands and lead hooks will take there toil, Ortiz is too open as he attacks.
Not sure about the stoppage JD, points seem more likley.

@ybsteam Agree on most fronts, except the exact outcome…I really think Ortiz may have over-trained, and may burn out late, from missing punches, getting beaten to the body/head with sharp left hooks underneath and right hands over the top, and may not reach the final bell. Sure, a Mayweather decision is USUALLY the outcome in his title fights, but we’ll see.

I don’t think Ortiz has much of a chance. I think what we will see is a boring one sided victory by Mayweather. He will totally outclass Ortiz. Mayweather rarely knocks anyone out. So I call for a boring one sided victory. Ortiz won’t be able to land much. I am glad I won’t be paying anything to watch this junk.
Ja Dawson says
@Jeff Everyone is telling me decision win for Mayweather, but I’m sticking with the late stoppage. Don’t make me cancel my order with your harsh, yet possibly true words! 🙂
Jeff says
I think I have learned my lesson from watching 24/7 last time. Seeing Ortiz hitting that tire with that sledgehammer reminds me of the Margarito 24/7 chopping wood with that axe in preperation for his fight with Pacquaio. I was sold Margarito was going to win that fight after that. I am not that stupid this time around.

@Jeff LOL!!!
louieguti says
i know Ortiz does not have a good chin but i cant say mayweather has that much of a better chin since it has never been tested or maybe mosely kind of exposed it for future reference. i hope Ortiz can test it in the early rounds cause that’s his best opportunity to do so, i think he needs to be aggressive and nothing less if he wants to win
Ja Dawson says
@louieguti Thanks for writing and a very good point about not knowing how good/bad Mayweather’s chin is. Well, he was clipped pretty good by DeMarcus Corley several years ago, Zab Judah more recently and Shane Mosley most recently. I agree, that’s not a ton of samples to assess Mayweather’s chin, but it’s enough to make me realize he’s not in the Roy Jones category either.
louieguti says
I’m satisfied in Mayweather that he’s fighting a dangerous fighter, its been a while
Ja Dawson says
@louieguti Not many folks think Ortiz is THAT dangerous, but I tend to agree with you. Not long ago, he was considered a can’t-miss prospect. The fight may be more entertaining than many expect, i.e. because of Floyd’s ring rust.
Jeff says
I stand corrected “Junk”
Ja Dawson says
@Jeff Agreed, and why would anyone want a rematch? HBO did an excellent job of giving folks the appearance that Ortiz had a chance. I think he has/had worlds of potential but the Maidana loss stunted his growth, and this may have completely halted it.
Ja Dawson says
@jb Did you not hear the chants of Mexico, Mexico during the fight jb. Mayweather has his share of fans obviously fighting in his adopted hometown, but you can’t convince me that Ortiz did not have a legion of the crowd support this past Saturday.
