Bailey And Urango Prove That There Is Still A Market For Free Boxing

September 1, 2009 By Ja Dawes

When this fight was first signed, all boxing die-hards knew that it’d be a good fight, but not this good. Recently, Roy Jones and Jeff Lacy battled for Floridian supremacy. The all-Florida ring mayhem produced by Randall Bailey (39-7, 35 KOs) and Juan Urango (22-2-1, 17 KOs) made that fight look like must-turn TV. Speaking of television, the best thing about this fight was that it was on ESPN, not a premium cable channel or PPV!

Although the resilient Urango ultimately survived Bailey’s right hand power, and felled him with his own left hand bombs, there were no losers on August 28, 2009. Actually, there were quite a few (more on that later).

The Winners

  1. ESPN Friday Night Fights for presenting us with two title fights (Light heavyweight Tavoris Cloud dominated Clinton Woods in an exciting undercard scrap for an IBF trinket) for the price of none (technically).
  2. Fight fans were treated to a Fight of the Year (Urango vs Bailey) candidate without much pre-fight hoopla.
  3. The Sunshine State has been the stage for major boxing lately. Berto, Jones, Lacy, and now Bailey and Urango have all fought in Florida this year.

The Losers

  1. Anyone who missed the fight.

Since I don’t like being around losers, I leave you with this. Enjoy.
