I know I can be very boring with my fight picks at times. I was thinking about going against the grain with this one, and picking the underdog Lamont Peterson to upset the favored Danny Garcia.
But in life, you have to be who you are. And I am woefully rational. So I can't help but go with my mind (Garcia) over my heart (Peterson).
And heart is the operative word in this matchup–both men have tons of it!
Sure, this fight will also be about skill, as both men have decorated amatuer backgrounds and glossy professional records.
Garcia (29-0, 17 KO) had over 120 amateur bouts and just missed the 2008 Summer Games. Peterson (33-2-1 17 KO) had a very decorated amateur career as well.
Both men have faced a proverbial "who's who" of the welterweight division, not named Mayweather or Pacquiao.
- The undefeated Garcia has defeated Amir Khan (TKO 4), Erik Morales twice (UD 12, KO 4), Zab Judah (UD 12) and Lucas Matthysse (UD 12).
- Peterson has defeated Amir Khan (SD 12), drew with Victor Ortiz (MD 10), and lost to Timothy Bradley (by UD 12) and Lucas Matthysse (by TKO 4).
So their respective pedigrees are undeniable in addition to their heart.
So What Will Be The Difference?
Both men are slick, boxer-punchers with good hand speed, steady footwork and decent pop on their punches.
The biggest ex-factors will be chin and defense.
In terms of chin and defense, I give Garcia a solid edge because he's never been stopped and, although he's been in his fair share of "mini-wars," he's dominated most of the rounds that he's fought as a professional.
Peterson has a good resume but I can not overlook the fact that he's been knocked out badly by their one common opponent, Lucas Matthysse–a fighter who Garcia mostly controlled.
There will be no knockout in this fight but there will be a definitive winner:
Danny Garcia by UD 12 over Lamont Peterson on April 11 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY!
