Floyd Mayweather Jr. intends to fight twice in 2013 – and it’s the second proposed fight which has received more than its fair share of tongues wagging.
In what's shaping up to be a September to remember, the undefeated Las Vegas resident wants a hometown fight for the second time in only four months; rumors persist that his opponent will be the undefeated current WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KOs).
Both fighters are in talks to appear on the same card over the Cinco de Mayo weekend; a time of year that’s always a huge draw on pay-per-view with the Mexican contingent of boxing fandom. While ‘Money’ Mayweather’s promoters hold the cards close to their chest in terms of announcing a potential opponent for that date, the idea seems to be that both fighters will square off on September 14th – the day before Mexican Independence Day – pending their results in May.
Of course, a lot rests on whether or not both men will be victorious in their May bouts; as Mayweather’s (43-0, 26 KOs) opponent for May is still yet to be confirmed, he could be at a disadvantage with only three months of preparation time. Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) is the most likely candidate at the moment having called out Mayweather following his last fight, a unanimous decision against Andre Berto.
Meanwhile on the May date, in what’s being billed as a double-header supercard, Alvarez looks likely to face Austin Trout, who is the current WBA light-middleweight champion and no less ambitious; questions are being raised over whether or not Alvarez would go on to face Mayweather if he loses the bout against Trout – it’s understood that Alvarez only agreed to go on as the supporting act for Mayweather in May in return for his name on the marquee in September.
Fans are already booking their flights and making hotel reservations in a bid to see these fighters in action over the two dates in May; and if not for the boxing then there are plenty of other attractions in Las Vegas; namely the casinos. While waiting for the big match to start they’ll be out in force at the blackjack table having practiced online at Ladbrokes first perhaps.
