Do you know who Vasyl Lomachenko is? Until today, if you told me that he was a Russian physicist, I wouldn’t have questioned your claim. >
But now that I know who he is-the best amateur boxer in the world, I feel somewhat embarrassed. According to ESPN, "the 24-year-old lightweight with sublime hand speed and devastating power was the king of the Beijing ring four years ago, winning featherweight gold and collecting the Val Barker Trophy as the Games’ best boxer."
Barring a major upset, Lomachenko appears poised to win the Val Baker Trophy again. And it’s a shame that he’s doing it with such little fanfare among many American boxing fans. The award has been won by a "who’s who" of boxers, including Teofilo Stevenson, Vassiliy Jirov and Roy Jones, Jr.
Shame on many American fight fans, myself included, for barely taking notice. But all of this chatter begs the question: does anyone care about U.S. Olympic boxing anymore?
