Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) vs Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) is the proverbial "toss up" fight. You have fight of the year candidates in name like Manny Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley, and then you have this fight. Froch-Johnson is a throwback to the glory days of the ’70s and ’80s when the baddest, toughest guys seemed to fight each other every month.
The final half of the "Super Six" tournament’s final four takes place on a neutral site in Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Don’t expect to see any hometown decisions in this one. The man who lands the most and lands the hardest will come away with the victory.
Which fighter is best prepared to win?
This ain’t going to be an easy prediction but I’ll start with the obvious. Carl Froch has only one loss in his career while Glen Johnson has lost 14 times. Now we all know that at least half of Johnson’s losses were highly-debatable, but the loss differential between the two fighters says a lot.
But I am by no means, discounting Johnson’s chances here. He has fought and defeated some of the best boxers in world from 168-175 pounds. His hit list includes Roy Jones, Jr. and Antonio Tarver. Froch’s recent big name victims include: Jean Pascal, Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell.
Although Froch’s "hit list" is impressive, few fighters can match Johnson’s overall resume in terms of experience. In addition to fighting Jones and Tarver (twice), he’s also fought Bernard Hopkins, Clinton Woods (3x), Chad Dawson (twice) and Tavoris Cloud. Johnson will be prepared for anything that he sees in the ring on June 4.
Which fighter will win?
As I stated earlier, neither fighter will have a "home ring" advantage. Neither fighter has particularly fast hands. Froch’s advantages lie in the fact that he’s the younger and fresher fighter, has the naturally bigger frame, is a better puncher, and has better legs. Johnson counters with more experience, a better chin and better defense.
However, expect to see Carl Froch’s hand raised in victory (by unanimous decision) in two weeks when he faces Glen Johnson in a possible fight of the year candidate.

I’m taking Johnson in this one. I think Froch will begin to fold by the 8th or 9th round. He needs space to operate and doesn’t have the volume to keep Johnson off him. Tavoris Cloud threw over 600 punches and barely escaped with, in my opinion, a 2 points margin. I do expect Froch to pull another Abraham, now that he’s discovered his jab but Johnson knows how to get past that jab. We’ll see, should be an entertaining fight.

@boksen Very keen analysis. I could see it happening but Froch has proven me wrong far too often. I’m not betting against him now.
tom says
don’t know about the’ toss up’ (froch is the heavy fav.) i do agree with your pick and have a little on froch by dec.
Ja Dawson says
@Tom what makes you so confident (in Froch) based on what you have seen from both fighters most recently?
Charles Barrett says
Really good fight in prospect, the Road Warrior gives everyone a hard night, and will do the same again on Saturday, his constant pressure, body shots, right hands over the top will cause Froch problems.
Froch isn’t the hardest to hit, but his chin is sound and i think he will nick enough rounds to have his hand raised, he knows he has to keep things long, and he won’t find it as easy as he did with Abraham.
It’s Froch for me by tight points decision.
Ja Dawson says
@Charles Barrett I tend to agree with you here!
Bob says
JD! I am with you on this one, Froch appears to have more ways to win. Also records are records…and the Road warrior has lost by decision a number of times, I see it going this way again (not to mention there is big money in a Froch v Ward final)…so if its close it goes to the Cobra!
Any thoughts on the Chavez v Zibik bout?
Ja Dawson says
@Bob Happy to see you see it how I do! 🙂 Re: Chavez-Zibik, I know so little about Zibik, I don’t have a strong opinion on that one. If I were a betting man, I’d go with the meal ticket Chavez obviously, but who knows? He’s so protected, if this guy Zibik has a pulse, he may be able to upset the apple cart.
boksen says
You were right on this prediction. It was close, I had it 114 – 113 for Froch but he put in more effort towards the second half of the fight.
Eme says
Good fight last night, there were some brutal exchanges between these two guys, but I think Froch won clearly and the judge that had the fight a draw must be on something.
On the other hand, I think Zbik got robbed, even the mexican broadcast had the german 1 round ahead before getting into the final round…
Ja Dawson says
@boksen It’s what I do (just kidding, sort of :). I thought Froch 115-113 or even 116-112. The story of Glen Johnson’s life-damn good, but not good (busy) enough.
Ja Dawson says
@Eme Yeah, I had Froch by 2-4 points on the scorecards. Good scrap though, as most expected. I think Zibik got eked-his punches just are so light If this were the amateurs, he may have won, but it’s the pros, and he seemed to almost double over from many of Chavez, Jr.’s shots. That stated, I still thought it was close, and had Chavez winning 7 rounds (115-113). That stated, although I respect JCC, Jr.’s heart and fighting spirit, he’s a paper champion and is likely to be dissected by most of the middleweight top ten. Zibik is a nice fighter, but he was a paper champ too. Could you imagine Sergio Martinez or even Paul Williams in there with either one of them?!?
Ybsteam says
Great fight on Saturday night, i had Froch up by a couple rds, (Maybe i was being kind to Johnson),
The Cobra’s defense is like Swiss cheese, just as well he has a chin of iron, Johnson looked as though he’d hurt Froch to the body at times, but once again he pulls it out.
As for Chavez, it was mission success, but only just, the team has done a great job to get him this far, but now he has the title he has to swim with the sharks, lets see what happens.
Anyone interested ..ybsboxingbodyshots.
Ja Dawson says
@Ybsteam You are so right about Froch. The problem I have, ala Paul Williams, is eventually what will happen when someone does TAG that chin? The fight will be over. I a much more a fun of the art of self-defense rather than the ability to take a punch sans defense. But for now, Froch is a bad, bad man, and it’s why his fight with Ward is a toss-up, because I do not think Ward can hurt him (to the head at least). I think that fight may come down to its location-if it’s in the States, Ward may win a close decision. If it’s in the UK, look for Froch to get the nod. Not saying they cheat for hometown/home country fighters, but I’m just saying… 🙂
I agree 100% re: Chavez, Jr. Now, here come the real exams. These fights to-date have been exams, but of the open book variety.
