Personally, I believe that Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KO’s) is the best super middleweight in the world. But I don’t think he is the best by much. If and when he meets Andre Ward (23-0, 13 KO’s), I feel that this debate will be resolved.
Standing in the way of this potential showdown is "King" Arthur Abraham (32-2, 26 KO’s) as well as the winner of Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) vs. Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35KO’s).
Will Abraham derail my 168-pound superfight dream matchup?
I don’t think so-and here’s why:
One, Andre Ward has the better defense. For someone who starts as slow as Abraham usually does, I don’t see him hitting Ward early or often. Getting behind on the scorecards against a fighter who doesn’t wilt late, does not bode well for Abraham.
Two, Ward has the faster feet. Against a plodding fighter such as Abraham, expect Ward to easily dart in and out of trouble in the ring.
Three, the ring generalship criteria is definitely in Ward’s favor. He can fight from the outside, but his uncanny ability to fight inside belies someone of his technical skill level.
Look for Ward’s underrated in-fighting ability to carry the day in what promises to be a very physical fight.
Four, hand speed is what it is. And that is, the most important aspect to just about any boxing match. Ward passes the test here while Abraham fails.
And look for the "King" to leave sans crown this Saturday. Andre Ward will be one step closer to super middleweight supremacy after his comprehensive unanimous decision here.
