Sergio Vs. Sergei, Southpaw Vs. Southpaw

February 22, 2011 By Ja Dawes

When Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) meets Sergei "Razor" Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs) for Martinez’s Ring middleweight title on March 12, the world’s best middleweight (Martinez) will be facing one of its best junior middleweights (Dzinziruk). Both men are southpaws with sparkling records. These facts can not be denied.

What can be questioned, however, is whether Dzinziruk is really one of the world’s best junior middleweights?

Honestly, it’s hard to tell. What I do know is that he’s undefeated, 6’0" tall (good height for a middleweight), and is a left-handed boxer, buoyed by an excellent jab.

What I don’t know is whether he can deal with the speed, take the punch and match wits with a world class fighter such as Martinez, especially given his modest competition to-date.

Below is how I see the fighters matching up.

Look for Maravilla to cut up the Razor’s face as if they should change nicknames. Sergio Martinez will be the southpaw raising his left hand at the end of the day.

ortiz did not look good in his last fight. maybe that is why berto will fight him. berto is a big favorite. thus this may not be worth betting.

@tom Yes, it appears that that’s Berto’s MO. When he was slated to fight Shane Mosley, that appeared to be the only time that he was set to fight a very dangerous (hard-punching), natural welterweight. Ortiz is reasonably dangerous and indeed hard-punching, but he’s a natural junior welterweight.
