Last week I stated the case for Ricky Hatton against Manny Pacquiao, but today I will tell you why he has little chance to win next Saturday. It’s simple. Manny Pacquiao is the better fighter. When I looked at each key factor in this fight, nearly all of them seem to point to a Pac Man victory. We saw what excellent hand speed did to Hatton when he met Floyd Mayweather nearly two years ago. The results were disastrous.
Unfortunately for Hatton, speed isn’t the only advantage that Pacquiao will have in seven days. Below I break down what he’s up against. The challenge will be daunting.
Factor | Hatton | Pacquiao |
Chin | X | |
Competition | X | |
Conditioning | X | |
Defense | X | |
Footwork | X | |
Ring Generalship | X | |
Location | Even | Even |
Power | X | |
Size | X |
I have seven of 10 key factors in favor of the pride of the Philippines. Hatton has the sturdier chin (maybe) and is definitely the bigger man. But that’s it. On paper, this looks like a Manny Pacquiao blowout. But a wise man once said, "paper don’t win titles." That’s true. But speed does. Power doesn’t hurt either. The man with both in this fight is Pacquiao. These factors will lead Manny Pacquiao to a stoppage victory over Ricky Hatton around round nine in an entertaining scrap.

great site by the way and i almost agree with you in every way about the predition in the hatton pacquiao fight i do not think he will stop him do.

Thanks for the props on the site. Feel feel to subscribe to the newsletter too!
OK, shameless self-promotion aside, curious, why do you think Pacquiao will not stop Hatton Jack?
Gabriel says
Your prediction for the Pac-Man sounds like your prediction a while back regarding why DLH will stop Manny… (which costs me a cool c-note)
Like you said, it looks good on paper, but up until now Hatton was nothing but brute force. Mayweather is doing something beautiful with Ricky.
Let’s hope the pride of the UK, does something magical that night.
Go Hatton!!!

PacFan says
The fight will be stop in 10 round by PACMAN..
Ja Dawson says
That sounds fair to me PacFan. Do you see the fight being close?
bud says
well I am involved money wise with this fight even thou I did not want to be, as a part of one of my bets I need to place a £30 to win on a fight and out side of Haye vs Kilstcko which is far off this is the best fight to wager on.
I will say that the next pavlik fight v sergo most interests me even above this and the haye fight, sergo is at 15/2, around there which is outlandish, he stands aa chance in there, I think he is a poor mans Corba in style wises, HE FIGHTS..
, as the fight nears I would like to put my thoughts down about just why I picked Manny over Hatton, Manny is at his prime, all he needs to do is get in there and get out, in and out, fast,
You all said the Froch v Taylor fight was not going to be a barn burner (which is was), Well Ill eat my hat if this is not one, lets at least agree on that.
ITS GOING TO BE HOT THAT RING, OH BOY..
Ja Dawson says
I expect it to be UNLESS Ricky gets frustrated and starts to maul/hug – which I think is a distinct possibility. Question: Did you find Hatton-Mayweather particularly exciting? It was an OK, albeit on-sided fight, but Ricky’s mauling tactics can be an eye sore. I can see this fight being similar stylistically. What makes it exciting is also the crowd and ring atmosphere though – just hop the in-ring action matches the outside of the ring electricity.
Eli says
Hey Ja im back. Your factors seem about accurate but I feel they might be a little skewed. I have been analyzing this fight and have come to the conclusion that Hatton will stop Paquiao I believe in 6. Now that you are done laughing here are the reasons why I believe that. Hatton is at his best in this weight class he is quicker, stronger, and is able to throw more combinations. I dont know how people can say that Paquiao has a harder punch than Hatton I feel that they have been hypnotyzed by Paquiao’s performances against fighters who were elite but are now PASSED there PRIME. De la Hoya in no way is even suppose to be considered a test for Paquiao because he basically went in there in a defensive mode and never let his hands go. Diaz which was the fight which people are also using to measure Paquiaos power is also not a very good one. Diaz has no pop in his punch he is alot slower than hatton and just couldn’t touch Paquiao. His gameplan was not followed he threw it after the 2nd round. Now Hatton is an elite fighter in his prime. What he lacked was defense and ability to consistently throw combinations but I have to admit since Mayweather addition he has really improved and I feel he has peaked at the perfect time. He will overwhelm a much smaller Paquiao. Hattons feints and head movement will prove to be the deciding factor as it was in the HAtton vs Malignaggi fight. Malignaggi could not solve the new puzzle constructed by Mayweather and I cant see Paquiao solving it either. Hatton will hack Paquiao to the body which will cause Paquiao to drop his hands and goodnight Paquiao. Paquiao has never faced someone so commited to the body like Hatton just ask Castillo if Hattons body shots hurt. Paquiao is as high as he can be and I dont think that at a idle stage he will be able to beat a Hatton who all he can remember is losing to the #1 p4p he will be hungry and he will take the fight to Paquiao.
Ja Dawson says
Long-winded argument, but Ja jas to respectfully disagree. The problem I have with Hatton in this fight is that 1) although he may have improved slightly under Mayweather, a leopard doesn’t lose its stripes, 2) he’s still not fast, 3) he’s struggled with fighters I believe are inferior to Pac Man, even if bigger (Collazo and Lazcano to name a few), and 4) that Pacquiao is simply better. Hatton has a chance to impose his size and aggression, but I also think that will run him into Pacquiao’s firepower. If he somehow develops a jab, to disrupt Pac Man’s rhythm, then he has a chance…but when have we ever seen Ricky consistently jab? Don’t expect to see that on Saturday. If it happens, then he deserves to win! 🙂
Eli says
Well I see your point but I can probablly defend Hatton by saying that those fights in no way were even half as big as this one. So his motivation coming into those fights may have not been at its peek, he had a shot at a the number 1 p4p and fell short. He now knows he needs to train harder and he wants it more. His legacy is on the line in his eyes. He will go in there and overwhelm a not so motivated Paquiao. The crowd will be on his side and he will be energized by an electrying crowd. The only way I believe Paquiao has a chance is if he can hurt Hatton which I strongly feel he can’t. Paquiao has been riding his weight like a rollercoaster and I really see him finally getting the effects of the difficult task.Hatton’s size will overwhelm as for fight day I anticipate that Hatton will out weigh Paquiao anywhere from 7 to 12 pounds which is a significan ammount of weight which will be a major factor in wearing down Paquiao.
Ja Dawson says
Eli, remember this, “Size may matter, but skills kill.” Pacquiao has more of the latter.
Eli says
Mayweather may have provided some skills which may seem to be the recipe to defeating Paquiao. He has been working on Hatton’s timing, his jab, and punches in bunches good ol combinations and lets not forget an improvement in defense that sounds like the perfect recipe for handling Paquiao a L. The hardest puncher Paquiao has ever faced would have to be Marquez and Hatton has a stiffer punch which will send Paquiao to the canvas. Marquez rocked Paquaio but couldn’t drop him but Hatton’s power is more devastating. Paquiao is a great fighter but he has really been put up on a pedastal way to high where he is not suppose to be and he is in for a nasty fall.
Eli says
I enjoy your analysis as it sinks in to my brain. I am more able to analyze the fight from different angles. You are a great predictor but I feel sometimes you may be too influenced by situations or fighters who have been over hyped or over exposed. Many people are swayed due to over exposure you have to be able to remove those bias and research the other fighter this may increase your prediction ability.
Ja Dawson says
Funny, I don’t think Hatton punches that hard, except maybe to the body. His bad footwork often diminishes his power BUT he is vey strong in the upper-body. Again, it’s hard for me to feel a fighter’s old habits can be reduced so much to help them win in a mega-fight. I shoulda learned that lesson with Jermain Taylor (ouch)!
Ja Dawson says
Man, I am unbiased and I don’t believe the hype (i.e. Hatton hype :). I hear your feedback but I sincerely try to look at the qualities of each fighter objectively. I just do this for sun (smile), I’m no more expert than you…but you will soon see, much of my analysis is pretty objective…the Boxing Fight Predictor…coming soon…yes, shameless plug for a new tool I’ll be launching soon!
Lucio says
Much of the comments above are by people following their hearts and hype around Hatton. Hatton has probably improved, SLIGHTLY. Malignaggi, is a good boxer, however he has no power which allowed Hatton to run through him…..will he be able to do the same with Pacquiao????? The answer is NO! Furthermore, Hatton’s strategy of trying to box Pacquiao is going to prove to be a disaster. His “aggression” better said holding and mauling, is his best way to beat Pacquiao in my opinion. Oh and I forgot, I hope those British fans don’t boo our anthem like last time, yet again that’s is why they never really win :p
Ja Dawson says
Welcome back Sniferneal…that’s basically how I see it. I leopard (Hatton) doesn’t lose it stripes (mauling and brawling) usually.
johann says
i read somewhere that hatton’s previous trainer had mentioned that the filipino fans couldnt afford to watch the fight in las vegas, leading to a larger british crowd.. if ever there is a larger british crowd, its probably because hatton hasnt had as much megafights and its more of a “big deal” for him.. as for hatton’s previous trainer, he’s such a retard..
bud says
I understand it is confirmed F.Mayweather Jr is training(Las Vagas) for a return bout, does he fight the winner of this bout?
People want to see Manny Mayweather, Hatton had his shot, I am a slight Hatton fan but really it would be better if manny gets in Mayweather, that would be a historic fight.
I would not bet the under at any round in that fight I believe that would go to points?
You get those kind of fights every now and then, two truely great skilled boxing technicans, both at their peak in all regards, both displaying the true art of boxing.
If you all think back to the Hatton Mayweather fight… what happend of major consequence, 50% of Hattons game plain OR MORE, was taken away by the ref, it was a zero tolerance take on holding and mauling, I mean it even went behond that, it was not a level playing feild for hatton first time around v Mayweather.
Im not saying I like holding and maualing, but that was a set up, that was kind of surprising that who ever had that much power basicly told the ref: under no circumstance allow ricky to hold and hit.
Sorry went off the track there 🙂
I have my money reluctantly on Manny, im not reluctant about this fight, I think its going to be good to see Hatton v another all time p4p.
Maybe Hatton gets in there and destroys I mean annialate Manny inside of 5 rounds, any one thought about that?

(Johann) Interesting point, but not surprising given the economy. Hey, leave Hatton’s trainer alone…he’s gotta lot of life miles on him! He’s funny though at least.
Ja Dawson says
bud, if hatton does what you say…i may order the fight and then pay to see the next saw movie. lol
jack says
i know pacquiao has some real power after seeing the de la hoya fight but pacman was fighting a weak man that night and hatton looks to be in the best shape hes ever been + hes size advantage thats why i think he wont stop him. is this site free to subscribe too??
Ja Dawson says
Good point jack, Pac man was indeed facing the skeleton of Oscar, but I think he showed power against Diaz as well (although Diaz was no world-beater). He’s so fast and has such a powerful base, that his power just seems pretty steady from 120ish to 140ish. Pacquiao’s a freak. I can see your point, Hatton has generally been durable, but I think Pac is on a different level right now. Pacman wins this. The only hope Hatton would have is if the fight was in Manchester with Dave Parris as referee. Gee Tszyu must be a good person because he never once complained about that blatant cheating that went on. Anyway it won’t happen in Vegas.Pac wide UD
Ja Dawson says
Darren, I just lost the water I was drinking right now reading your post … gimme a freaking towel man! LOL
Jeff Dooley says
I will pick Ricky Hatton to knock out Manny Pacqauio. For no logical reason, other than I will hope Manny will take this fight too lightly and Ricky will catch him. I know this sounds rather impossible to believe, but with Ricky’s supporters there, It will be the angel on his shoulder, he will need. Believe it or not. I am not British, either.
Ja Dawson says
Ricky’s supporters can’t get into the ring with him though Jeff.
Eli says
Hatton will knock Paquiao out in 6. Better believe it Manny will get pummeled.
Ja Dawson says
Eli, you are tired I presume? 🙂
ARMANDO says
Watch, the 3rd and 4th round Hatton is a GONER. Exclusive Info……
Ja Dawson says
Armando, I doubt it’ll be that early…but I agree with you on the outcome (Pacquiao TKO victory).
eliz says
People are analyzing Hatton and Pacquiao based on externals. Hatton has size and punches(he relies most of his talks on the external as his supporters). They’ve forgotten the Pacman prays like Shaolin monks, the great martial artist, the ninja who can take on an entire army. Pacman has both the external(speed, punch, southpaw and conditioning and training) and he has the internal(the faith, the spiritual), when you touch the invisible power of the spiritual(god-within, you become invincible), that’s how the martial artist overpowers huge warriors. The spiritual touches the subatomic powers of the invisible, Pacman got it…When you’ve the spiritual , your powers are magical –gigantic ,almost ballistic, nuclear and unstoppable…because the Pacman prays, he gets assistance from that invisible energy.
GOD BLESS PACMAN, a hitman, hits only once, but the PACman keeps moving and gobbling up any obstacles.
eliz says
eliz from sf again,
sorry forgot to put this analogy of a computer, the hardware(external and software and cpu(internal). The external is only as good as what kind of CPU, or memory or software you’ve inside. You may have a humongous computer hardware but if your system internals are not there, your computer can hardly do anything.
The pacman might not have a huge external but his internal are pretty big spectacular because of his faith, belief, support, good heart(helping poor people who need hel).
The big hype on Hatton is his external prowess(size, mauling, brawling type, bigger blows) but his internal hasn’t been emphasized at all
the pacman prays, when you pray, you can do almost anything. If god is with me, who can dare be against me..that’s the invincible power of MP
Ja Dawson says
Eliz, that’s a mouthful of a response, but I think all that matters is that you think Pacquiao is the better fighter and will win. 🙂 By no means am I discounting the impact of physical and spiritual wellness on a fighter, but I really think both fighters have good “energy,” but the man with the more weaponry will emerge victorious. And that man in Manny Pacquiao.
Ja Dawson says
Prayer + action = success…not prayer alone. I am sure the losing fighter in most fights have prayed to their God as well. But in the end the man with the greater tools (both mental and physical) typically wins and you can jot that down!
bud says
eliz, it is difficult for people to understand what you are trying to convey.
I have had the pleasure to work for a great master, some one knowbel, through him all things turn from chaos to order, in all regards.
What you are saying is that Manny Pacman is a master, and thou his correct living, thinking, and doing, he has become one with every thing and has great power, the power of a master.
There is much truth in what you talk about but for the average hot dog eating boxing fan it sounds like mumbo jumbo, suffice to say that some people do shine differently and it takes deep consideration to understand why it is they seem to work just right, effortlessly, powerfuly.
Power is nothing with out control.
I think you have made a vaild and interesting post and its an aspect of the fighters worth bringing out to dicuss, it sure canbe labeled, is the fighter mentally strong and I think thats the kind of langauge we all understand.
As the fight draws near I am most interested just how manny deals with Hatton, he is no mug, he is a good fighter, a very very good fighter.
This will be a fight to bring clarity to just how good Manny is, I think we are going to find out that Manny is even better than we all thought after the oscar arse put down 🙂
lordcloudx says
Bud: You were right. 2nd round lolz! That’s even earlier than pacman fans predicted.
Ja Dawson says
bud is da man.
jack says
nice predition on the fight ja. pacman was unbelievable
Ja Dawson says
Thanks jack. But to me it was pretty obvious when I punched in the numbers. I am just shocked he did it so early. I hate to say this – the way Hatton lost, I think he may be better served to retire.
Rouie says
hey ja..what are your houghts about mayweather coming back and istead of fighting pacman he chose marquez? i think its a bad matchup..marquez mayweather..both are counter punchers..tough both are good.
Rouie says
by the way..everyone was surprised with the oucome..even manny, the only one that was not surprised that the fight ended early was coach freddie.
bud says
if I may, I watched both fighters enter the building pre the fight (hbo) and hatton just looked ill in my eyes, v manny who looked like the sun was coming out of the top of his head and had history following through his veins. I was on Manny at £100 at 1.4 but knew just what was going to happen, I then dumped my intire bank on Manny at 1/2.
He looked out of sorts, not home mentally, weak, and it was just a totally walk over.
I mean seriously just wow..
I say even a prime Hatton would have been totally anialated inside of 9 rounds any way but my main point is that you could phsycally see the difference between the two fighters.
All that aspartine chewing gum he chews all the time…
Roach does not seem like a joke couch to me, what a wounderfull partnership him and moor, I really hope Roach can stay training some how for many years to come.
Jeff Dooley says
Ricky is nothing more than a good “B” level fighter. Much like a Fernando Vargas. He is not good enough to win the big fight.
Ja Dawson says
Jeff, sadly you are probably right about Hatton. I hate to diss the guy too much, he fights very hard and has a legion of fans, but he’s proven very limited when he steps up against good fighters in their prime. To his defense, he got annihilated by the two best dudes of the past decade.
Ja Dawson says
Rouie, I think Mayweather will try to walk Marquez down…feeling he’s the bigger man and also seeing how easy Marquez was to hit and muscle (in his win against Juan Diaz). I think Mayweather has a few agendas: 1) defeat the man (Marquez) decisively who many pundits felt beat Manny at least once to send a message and 2) not to jump right into a fight with SUPER PAC MAN…it’s not your average tune-up though. I wouldn’t sleep on Marquez. I do agree they are counter-punchers and that can lead to dull boxing, but I think the speed of both men and Mayweather’s likely aggression will make it a decent scrap (for however it lasts).
Rouie says
yes I agree I think marquez even he was down in his last fight with manny won the fight..and im a filipino…I sure hope manny will fight them both in the near future..I want to see how Manny and Roach will do in the fight..coach roach said that Manny was awakened when he last fought Marquez, thats why he is more of a thinking fighter now than before..For the marquez and mayweather fight their both good, I just hope it wont be a dull fight.
ssv says
My Prediction
They’re fight would be the Last Fight….
They will both come out in the different side of stage….
Both national anthem would be sing…
As well as the US National Anthem…
There referee would be the actor look alike captain of Poseidon…
Manny will be introduced first..
then hatton will be followed….
Once the ring would be ring.. they will fight…
Hatton makes his move first doing his battery operated robot attacked… then Tumbles by right hook…
he will be counted.. and then recovered slightly..
Manny will unleashed is left supersharging punch to a covering hatton… but still be pummeled like a PAPER..
Hatton will fall and kneel and wait to count till 6 then get up…
Hatton will unleashed his hook at the final second but was snubbed by manny… coz 1st round will be over…
Big Mouth Mayweather sr, hattons trainer, will advice Hatton to wave he’s head
At the start of 2nd round , hatton will try to forged his doubling sight…
actions will happened
faking his status… the bell ringer has its stomach ache coulndt wait to got to CR do ring the bell.. signaled mr. pacquiao to paste the KAPPWAAM on hattons face..
Manny makes A Dempsey Roll strike with side step super charge waist circling LeFT Super HOOK to Tuna like jaw of mr. hatton.. which we will not believe will shatter…
Thats all… Mr hatton will Fall flat on its face… nope its back like a big tree chopped saying TIIMMMMMBEERRRRRRRRR….
While remembering Hattons Trainer advised to wave his head… he couldnt move it…
so what he did is wave his eyes…
….hehehe.. Just watch the replay…
Ja Dawson says
That ain’t right (lol).
Jeff Dooley says
True, Losing to two guys who don’t appear to be anyones league really is nothing Ricky should feel ashamed about. I don’t think Ricky needs to retire unless its for health issues. He has not won 45 fights if he did not have expectional talent. Keep going Ricky. There will still be great fights out there for him. The sport needs him.
Ja Dawson says
Jeff, I do not think Hatton has exceptional talent. I think he’s a mentally tough, physically strong, and hard-working athlete who got the most out of his somewhat limited skill set and natural ability. I do agree that he brings a measure of energy and fan base to the sport (he’s still the UK’s biggest attraction) that is important. But I also think he’ll likely NOT be in any other great fights…He’s struggled against solid fighters too (Lazcano, Collazo and others)…I just hope the guy is in good health…that’s two major concussions in his past three fights. (Agreed) His health should be the primary concern.

@Eli:
So Eli, i want to know what have you got to say now…
jim harrie says
I was hoping for a rejuvenated Hatton but I guess he didn’t change much. I don’t see the Hatton-Packy or Oscar-Packy fights as indications of what a Floyd-Packy would be like. Unlike Oscar, Floyd isn’t washed up and he is an extremely skilled fighter not to mention very fast. If he trains hard for this, I pick him by decision.
Ja Dawson says
jim harrie, rarely does a leopard lose its spots this late in one’s career. i hope hatton retires honestly. don’t want to see him go out like roy jones after two vicious concussion losses. i agree with you re: mayweather-pacquiao.
